About the Chapter

  •

Zeta Nu Sigma Chapter was chartered on April 12, 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts and is the first alumnae chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho to be chartered in the New England area.  Six phenomenal sorors saw the vision and commitment to continue Sigma Gamma Rho’s growth:

    Soror Laurella Baugh

    Soror Ruth Gough

    Soror Aurelia Brown

    Soror Lillian Seay

    Soror Crystal Gifford-Jackson

    Soror Karoline White

In 1989, Soror Brown along with Sorors Karen L. Johnson, Susan John and Alexis Delgado-Waldron, reactivated Kappa Nu Chapter, our first undergrad chapter based at Northeastern University. From there Zeta Nu Sigma chapter continued to assist in the growth of many other chapters in the New England area. Such as the chartering of Mu Iota at American International college in Springfield and Mu Kappa Chapter at Brown University in Providence, RI in the fall of 1991. This era in the New England history for Sigma Gamma Rho has been referred to as the “New England Explosion”.  In 1992, the undergraduate chapter development continued with the chartering of Nu Mu chapter at the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

Because of the rapid growth in membership and the broad spectrum of towns covered under Zeta Nu Sigma, the chapter then had to make a decision to support the expansion of a second alumnae chapter in the New England area. This chapter, chartered in 1996 in Hartford, CT, would be named Theta Alpha Sigma. They currently advise Nu Mu chapter, Mu Iota chapter and Pi Xi chapter, established in 2000 at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  Currently, New England boasts 9 Undergrad chapters (including, Sigma Beta at Quinnipiac University, 2008 and Southern Connecticut State University, 2008) and 6 Graduate chapters (Iota Chi Sigma - New Haven, CT, Lambda Beta Sigma- Springfield, MA,  Lambda Zeta Sigma - Lychfield, CT and Lambda Kappa Sigma - Brockton, MA)

Today, members of Zeta Nu Sigma are students, mothers, wives, and diligent workers in a range of careers including medicine, grassroots mobilization, higher education, and hardcore youth work to name a few. We are constantly expanding with the best and brightest of Boston’s most dynamic women – again bringing more women into our sisterhood with the establishment of the Northeast Region Chapter at the University of New Hampshire in 2005, the Northeast region chapter at Suffolk University and the Northeast Region Chapter at the University of Massachusetts Boston, both in 2008.  In 2011, Suffolk University was officially chartered and renamed Sigma Kappa Chapter.  2011 also saw the induction of 7 young women into the Rhoers Club of Zeta Nu Sigma, the first Rhoer Club in New England.  In 2012, the chapter at the University of Massachusetts Boston was chartered and renamed Sigma Xi chapter.

As Zeta Nu Sigma continues to help to mentor and support our undergraduate members, the chapter continues to deepen its connection to the community.  Women of Zeta Nu Sigma are breaking into politics, affecting citywide change, and are vocal and mobile in the fight for quality communities, education, and improved quality of life for all members of Boston’s under recognized populations.
